The performances of Jones and Anderson aside, the cast was a 'Who's Who' of international stars, obviously relishing their outrageous roles, and no one was having more fun than venerable Max von Sydow, 51, who took the role of 'Ming the Merciless' at the suggestion of his children, and had such a good time that he would make time afterward for an occasional excursion into 'camp' between his more 'dramatic' roles. Israeli actor, Topol, 45, so memorable in FIDDLER ON THE ROOF, and about to do a 'James Bond' adventure, FOR YOUR EYES ONLY, made a funny, slightly mad Dr. Zarkov, while future 'James Bond' Timothy Dalton, 36, 'channeled' Laurence Olivier in his intense portrayal of Prince Barin. There is a lot of 'Falstaff' in 42-year-old Brian Blessed's gregarious performance as the leader of the 'Birdmen', Prince Vultan, and an unrecognizable Peter Wyngarde, 46, oozes malevolence as Ming's robotic aide-de-camp, Klytus.
And for all the hormonally-charged boys, clothing-challenged Ornella Muti, 25, as Ming's oversexed daughter, Princess Aura, is erotically breathtaking, splitting her youthful lusts between Flash and Prince Barin.
While the score was composed by Howard Blake, much of the film featured songs written especially for FLASH GORDON by the legendary rock band, Queen. Freddie Mercury's soaring vocals are unforgettable, and this film, with 1986's HIGHLANDER, would mark the band's finest film work.
Directed with a flair for campiness by Mike Hodges, there is so MUCH imagination lavished on the production, from sets to costumes, to intentionally cheesy special effects (a homage to the Buster Crabbe '30s serials), and dialog rich with one-liners (penned by frequent "Batman" bard, Lorenzo Semple), that it is nearly impossible to catch everything in a single viewing...
So I suggest you BUY a copy of FLASH GORDON, and enjoy this classic, again and again!
Flash - a-ah - saviour of the universe
He's for everyone of us
Flash - a-ah
Just a man
Flash - a-ah - he'll save everyone of us
Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha
Flash - a-ah - he's a miracle
Flash - a-ah - king of the impossible
Stand for everyone of us
He'll save with a mighty hand
Every man every woman
Every child - with a mighty flash
Flash - a-ah - he'll save everyone of us
With a man's courage
He knows nothing but a man
But he can never fail
No one but the pure in heart
May find the golden grail
Oh oh - oh oh
